Protection order placed over 'endangered' Peter Alliss
|
UK. The creators of new golf website AnyoneForTee.com have applied for British golf commentator Peter Alliss to be placed on the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) list of Threatened Species in advance of next year's Ryder Cup, the first time a sporting commentator has been made the subject of such an order.
Mr Alliss joins a list of thousands of endangered fauna and flora around the world, ranging from the Red-shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix nemaeus), also known as the Asian colobine monkey, to the critically endangered Corsican Snail (Helix ceratina) rediscovered in 1995 after last having been seen in 1902.
In a statement, AnyoneForTee said: "Alliss (Commentatorix excellentus) has come under constant fire in recent years ever since he had the temerity to gently reproach Jean Van Der Welde's courageous but perhaps ill-advised strategy to avoid a triple bogey up the 18th at Carnoustie and win the Open."
"Every year, sports writers criticise him for his political incorrectness and his patronising remarks, the very reasons he came to be such a loved creature in the first place. There is a very real danger that if the attacks continue, Mr Alliss will be forced to flee the very habitat that has been crucial to his long survival. Outside of the television studio environment that he has become accustomed to, he would face a desperate struggle for survival."
"We must do everything in our power to protect him before it is too late. Just because he occasionally upsets viewers and critics with his comments about slow play, we cannot let Commentatorix excellentus go the same way as the Corsican Snail."
To encourage Mr Alliss' survival, AnyoneForTee has launched a new column called 'Alliss in Wonderland' (after his tendency to preface his remarks with "I wonder..."), which celebrates his finest on-air quotes and encourages other golf commentators to reach the same heights of wit, irony, savoir faire and regular complete deviation from the subject.
Readers are invited to submit by e-mail their favourite gems of the commentating art, by Alliss or any other golf commentator. We will give these a good home in Wonderland, and every two months an award will be given to the best example.
You can also find out more about Peter and his career both on and off the course, as well as read his musings on golf and life in general, by visiting his personal website here.
